Track laying can be divided into normal track laying and temporary track laying according to its nature. Normal track laying is to lay formal tracks on the completed permanent subgrade and bridge and tunnel buildings under normal conditions; temporary track laying is to meet the needs of engineering transportation and temporary lay tracks, which will be removed after the completion of the project.

According to the track laying direction, it can be divided into one-way track laying and multi-directional track laying. One-way track laying is from the starting point of the line to the end of the line. The starting point of this line can be either the junction point between the new railway line and the existing line or it can be a navigable port or an inland wharf from which track-laying materials and rolling stock come. Multi-directional track laying is to lay the track in sections and at the same time on the whole line when the construction period is tight and the transportation conditions permit, that is, it is carried out from both ends or more directions. Among them, two-way track laying is mostly used for new railways, and more track laying is often used when the second line of the railway is added.

The track laying method, it can be divided into two types: manual track laying and mechanical track laying, including three links of rail assembly, transportation, and laying.

Manual track laying is to transport the track-laying materials from the material base to the track-laying site by engineering trains or cars and connecting them on the spot to form the track. It is mainly suitable for partial plane reconstruction of convenient lines, special lines, and old lines with a small amount of track laying work, and is more economical.

Mechanical track laying is to transport the assembled rails at the base to the front of the track laying with a rail arrangement vehicle and then lay them on the roadbed with a track laying machine. It is mainly suitable for the track laying of new or old lines with large track laying works and the track laying of the second line. At present, the on-site construction in our country usually adopts mechanical track laying, and it is generally not suitable to use manual track laying unless it is necessary to use manual track laying in special circumstances.
